AES

The worldwide standard for scrambling data so only the right person can read it.

AES, the Advanced Encryption Standard, is the encryption almost everything uses to keep data private, from messaging apps to online banking to the files on your phone. Give it a secret key and it scrambles your data into nonsense that is practically impossible to unscramble without that key.

It turns up in AI news mainly around security research. When a model is tested on whether it can weaken or attack an encryption scheme like AES, the question is how much AI changes the balance between codemakers and codebreakers. So far the standard remains sound, but it is exactly the kind of thing researchers keep probing.
