AI Office

The European Commission body responsible for supervising general-purpose AI models and enforcing parts of the EU AI Act.

The AI Office is the unit inside the European Commission that supervises general-purpose AI models, meaning the big general models used for everything, and enforces the relevant parts of the EU AI Act. It was set up in 2024, but its enforcement powers only switched on in August 2026.

What it can actually do is fairly substantial: request technical documentation from a model provider, run its own evaluations, demand corrective measures, and issue fines reaching 15 million euros or 3 percent of worldwide annual turnover. It also runs a public complaints tool and a whistleblower channel, which suggests it expects a fair share of its leads to come from inside the companies it supervises.
