Allen Institute for AI
A Seattle nonprofit AI research institute, founded by Paul Allen, known for fully open models and datasets.
The Allen Institute for AI, usually shortened to Ai2, is a nonprofit research institute in Seattle founded in 2014 by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. It works closely with the University of Washington and publishes almost everything it produces, including the Olmo model family, training datasets and evaluation tools.
Its role in the ecosystem is a useful one: a lab with no product to sell and no share price to defend, which means its releases and its research tend to answer questions the commercial labs have less reason to ask.
