Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) was a marketplace where people earned money doing small digital tasks: labelling photos, transcribing audio, rating text. For nearly two decades that human piecework quietly trained the AI systems we use today.

Its story has a neat irony: the AI that crowd workers helped train eventually became good enough to do the crowd work itself.
