automatic content recognition
Smart TV technology that identifies what is on your screen, usually to build ad profiles.
Automatic content recognition, or ACR, is software in many smart TVs that regularly samples what is being shown and matches it against a database. It works whatever the source is: streaming apps, cable or a connected game console.
TV makers use the results to learn what households watch and to target advertising. Most sets let you switch ACR off in the privacy settings, though the option is often buried a few menus deep.
