Blackwell

The name of an Nvidia AI chip generation, now being succeeded by Vera Rubin.

Blackwell is Nvidia’s name for a generation of its AI chips, the workhorses that trained and ran many of the models in use today. Chip makers name their architectures like model years for cars, and Blackwell was the current one before Vera Rubin began to replace it.

The names matter mainly as a way to track progress. Each generation promises more AI work for less electricity, which is increasingly the number that decides what is affordable to run.
