container registry
A storage service for container images, the prepackaged bundles that hold an application and everything it needs to run.
A container image is an application packed together with its libraries, settings and system files, so it runs the same way on a laptop as on a server. A container registry is the warehouse those images are stored in and downloaded from. Docker Hub is the best known public one, and most companies also run private registries of their own.
Two details trip people up. First, a registry project that is set to public can be downloaded by anyone who finds the address, no account required. Second, an image carries more than its files: it also carries a build history recording the commands used to assemble it. Deleting a password from the files does nothing if a copy is still sitting in that history, and an image someone already downloaded cannot be recalled.
