Eric Xing
Founder of the Institute of Foundation Models and president of MBZUAI, and a vocal advocate for releasing training data rather than only model weights.
Xing is a machine learning researcher who spent years at Carnegie Mellon before moving to Abu Dhabi to lead MBZUAI. He founded the Institute of Foundation Models, which builds fully open models under the K2 name.
His argument, made most directly at the K2 Horizon launch, is that open source has to mean more than open weights: if nobody can see the data or follow the method, nobody can reproduce or check the result, and that is not science. It is one of the sharper criticisms of how the term open gets used in AI marketing.
