GenRec
Netflix's language-model-based recommendation system, which turns your viewing history into plain text.
GenRec is a recommendation system Netflix built in 2026 on top of a fine-tuned open-weight language model. Instead of describing you with thousands of hand-designed numerical signals, it writes your viewing history out as text and lets the model read it.
In Netflix’s own tests it beat the production system it was compared against, though by small margins, and it needed far less labelled training data to get there. Netflix calls it an early step and has not replaced its existing system with it.
