MAI
Microsoft's own in-house AI model family, reducing its reliance on OpenAI.
MAI (Microsoft AI) is the family of models Microsoft trains itself, separate from the OpenAI models it has licensed for years. Microsoft has started routing parts of its Copilot products to MAI models.
The MAI story is really a story about independence: even OpenAI’s closest partner wants its own engines, which tells you how strategic model ownership has become.
