Mistral AI is a French company, founded in 2023, that has become Europe’s most prominent builder of AI models. Led by Arthur Mensch, it is known for releasing capable open-weight models that companies can download and run on their own infrastructure.

Mistral’s pitch is closely tied to data control and digital sovereignty: because its models can be self-hosted, sensitive information never has to leave an organisation’s own servers. That makes it especially attractive to European businesses with strict privacy or compliance requirements.
