NewsGuard

A company that rates the reliability of news websites and tracks online falsehoods, increasingly used to audit what AI chatbots say.

NewsGuard is a New York company founded in 2018 that rates news and information websites for reliability, using human journalists rather than an algorithm. Each site gets a score and a short explanation of how it was reached, and browsers and platforms can show those ratings to readers.

Since chatbots arrived, a second line of work has become just as visible. NewsGuard runs regular audits in which it feeds known false claims to the major AI assistants and counts how often each one repeats, muddles or debunks them. Its fact check files also serve as the answer key in studies run by news organisations, including an NPR experiment in August 2026 that compared chatbots with search engines on state spread propaganda.
