PaperCut

Print management software used by schools, universities and offices worldwide, and a repeat target for attackers because of where it sits on the network.

PaperCut is an Australian company whose software tracks and controls printing across an organisation, counting pages, charging departments and holding jobs until someone badges in at the printer. Its NG and MF products are installed in a very large number of schools, universities, councils and offices.

It matters to security people out of proportion to what it does, because a print server usually sits deep inside the network and is connected to the directory that holds everyone’s accounts. A flaw there is a convenient way in. PaperCut has been exploited at scale more than once, most recently in September 2026, when two flaws were used by AI agents to breach hundreds of organisations within days.
