recursive self-improvement
The idea of an AI improving itself, then using the better version to improve further.
Recursive self-improvement, sometimes shortened to RSI, describes an AI system that makes itself more capable, then uses that upgraded ability to improve again, potentially speeding up with each round.
It is a central concept in debates about AI safety. A model that could reliably do this might advance very fast and become hard to oversee, which is why researchers test carefully for any early signs of it.
