FLUX is the family of image and video models built by Black Forest Labs. You have probably used one without knowing: FLUX models generate pictures inside Adobe Photoshop, Canva, Picsart and Mistral’s assistant.
The naming takes a moment to decode. Versions marked [dev] are open-weight models, meaning the trained file is public and you can run it yourself, but the licence limits commercial use. [schnell], German for fast, is the freely usable one. [pro] and [max] stay closed and are sold by usage. Smaller [klein] versions are built to run on a home computer with a decent graphics card.
FLUX 3, announced in July 2026, extends the family beyond pictures: it is trained on images, video and audio together and can be extended to predict physical actions, which is why it is also being tested in robotics.
