Robin Rombach is the co-founder and CEO of Black Forest Labs, the German company behind the FLUX image models. He is best known as the first author of the research paper on latent diffusion, the method that made high-quality image generation cheap enough to run on ordinary graphics cards.
That work became Stable Diffusion, the model that turned AI image generation into a mass phenomenon. Rombach later led research at Stability AI and left in March 2024 with several colleagues, founding Black Forest Labs a few months later.
His stated approach is that vision is the richest signal about the physical world, and that one model should learn from images, video, audio and physical actions together rather than in separate systems. That idea is the basis of the company’s FLUX 3 model.
