Andrew Ng starts a new AI learning company, and Coursera puts $100 million into it
LearnVector wants to replace one-to-many courses with an AI tutor that plans your path and stays with you until you have actually learned the thing. First products are targeted for early 2027.
Andrew Ng has founded a new company called LearnVector, and Coursera announced on Tuesday that it is investing $100 million for roughly a one-third stake on a fully diluted basis. The pitch is simple to state and hard to build: use agentic AI, meaning systems that plan and carry out multi-step work rather than answering one question at a time, to give every learner something close to a personal tutor. LearnVector says its systems will plan an individual learning path, adapt to how a particular person learns, and stay with them until they have mastered the skill. First product experiences are targeted for early 2027.
Ng is an unusually well-placed person to try this. He co-founded and led Google Brain, was chief scientist at Baidu, directed the Stanford AI Lab, and co-founded Coursera itself in 2012. His original Stanford machine learning course is one of the reasons a generation of engineers learned the field at all. Coursera investing in a company founded by its own co-founder is a striking arrangement, and the framing from both sides is complementary rather than competitive: Coursera has the catalogue, the credentials and the institutional partners, LearnVector is meant to build the delivery layer.
The idea behind it is older than AI, and it is worth knowing the name. In 1984 the educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom published research suggesting that students taught one-to-one performed about two standard deviations better than students in a conventional classroom, which is roughly the difference between an average student and one in the top few percent. The problem has always been cost: nobody can afford a human tutor for every learner. Every generation of education technology since has claimed it would close that gap, and none has. The honest question about LearnVector is not whether AI can explain a concept, it plainly can, but whether it can do the parts that make tutoring work: noticing that you have quietly stopped understanding, refusing to let you skip ahead, and keeping you showing up week after week. Motivation, not explanation, is where most self-directed learning dies.
What this means for you: nothing to try yet, since there is no product until 2027. But if you are learning anything with AI right now, the LearnVector premise points at a habit worth borrowing today. Instead of asking a chatbot to explain a topic, ask it to test you on it, to plan a sequence over several weeks, and to tell you plainly when your answer is wrong rather than politely agreeing. That is the difference between a search engine and a tutor, and current models can already do it if you ask. For educators and trainers, this is another signal that the valuable part of your job is shifting away from delivering explanations and towards structure, judgement and keeping people going.
