Anthropic Was Going to Raise Claude Sonnet 5's Price 50 Percent. It Just Cancelled That
The introductory price for Claude Sonnet 5 was only ever supposed to last through August. Anthropic just made it permanent instead of letting it jump 50 percent on September 1, right as OpenAI cut its own flagship's price.
Claude Sonnet 5 launched with what Anthropic called introductory pricing, $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with a planned jump to $3 and $15 starting September 1. That increase isn’t happening. Anthropic’s pricing page now states plainly that the $2/$10 rate “is now the standard price” and the scheduled September hike “will not occur.”
A token is roughly a chunk of a word, the unit AI companies bill by; input tokens are what you send the model, output tokens are what it sends back. The cancelled increase would have meant a 50 percent jump on every token, input and output alike, for anyone building on Sonnet 5 through the API. Instead, the rate that was only ever meant to be temporary is staying put indefinitely.
What’s actually going on here: pricing announced as “introductory” is usually a bet that a low rate now buys market share the company can monetize once the promotional period ends. Reversing that bet, in public, on the eve of the planned increase, isn’t something labs do when things are going according to plan. The timing matters: this reversal was confirmed on August 10, just as OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol became directly competitive with Claude Opus 5 on price. Anthropic didn’t have much room to make Sonnet 5, its mid-tier workhorse model, meaningfully more expensive while a rival was cutting prices on its flagship. Model pricing has become a genuine competitive lever between labs, not just a cost-recovery exercise.
What this means for you: if you’re a developer or business already building on Claude Sonnet 5, you can plan your September budget without the increase you may have been expecting, and the model stays one of the cheaper frontier-class options on the market. If you’re comparing AI providers for a new project, this closes some of the price gap that had opened up between Anthropic and OpenAI over the summer, worth factoring in alongside the actual capability differences between the models. For most casual users on a Claude subscription, this doesn’t change your monthly bill either way, since it only affects metered API pricing.
