ChatGPT Ads Just Landed in 31 European Countries
OpenAI's advertising system arrived in Germany, France, Spain, Italy and 27 other European countries on August 24. Here's who actually sees the ads, and who doesn't.
OpenAI switched on ads inside ChatGPT for 31 European countries on August 24, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Austria and the Netherlands. It’s the largest expansion yet of the advertising system OpenAI first tested with US users earlier this year, and it means European ChatGPT users are now part of the same business model shift.
Who sees the ads: only people on the free tier and on Go, the low-cost plan at 7.99 euros a month. If you pay for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Education, your ChatGPT stays ad-free, exactly as it does today. The ads themselves show up as clearly labeled panels alongside chatbot responses, not woven into them. At launch, OpenAI says targeting is deliberately light: it uses the topic of your current conversation, an approximate location, your device type, time of day and language. Your past chats and any saved memories are explicitly excluded for now. Advertisers reach ChatGPT through OpenAI’s own ads team, agency partners and technology partners first, with a self-service Ads Manager arriving later this year.
What’s actually going on here: ChatGPT now has roughly one billion weekly users, and OpenAI says about a fifth of conversations show commercial intent, someone asking about products, comparing options, planning a purchase. That’s a lot of unmonetized attention for a company burning through enormous sums on compute. Ad revenue reportedly grew more than 25 percent in the first weeks of August alone, which tells you this isn’t a side experiment anymore, it’s becoming a real pillar of the business. Rolling out to 31 countries at once, rather than testing market by market, suggests OpenAI wants scale fast, and Europe’s stricter privacy rules are likely why the initial targeting stays deliberately narrow rather than personalized.
What this means for you: if you’re on the free plan or Go in one of these countries, you’ll start seeing labeled ad panels in your conversations, and OpenAI’s own privacy notice is worth a quick read if you want to know exactly what triggers them. If ads bother you, that’s one more reason a paid tier looks attractive, though obviously that’s the point. For businesses and marketers, this is a genuinely new advertising surface worth watching, especially once self-service access opens up. Either way, nothing changes for your account itself, no new subscription, no new app.
