Amazon Nova
Amazon's own family of AI models, launched in 2024 and largely wound down in 2026.
Nova was Amazon’s attempt to build its own models rather than only host other people’s. Unveiled in December 2024 and offered through AWS, the family covered text, images and video, and was positioned as a sensible balance of cost and performance rather than a frontier contender.
In July 2026 Amazon reportedly scaled back most of the line, keeping the models running for existing customers but stopping active development. The story is a good illustration of a wider squeeze: frontier labs own the high end, open-weight models own the cheap end, and a competent model in the middle has trouble finding buyers. Amazon shifted resources to a new frontier research group instead.
