Ant Group
The Chinese financial technology giant behind Alipay, and the parent of the AI lab inclusionAI.
Ant Group is the company behind Alipay, the payment app used by hundreds of millions of people in China. It grew out of Alibaba and is one of the largest financial technology companies in the world, best known outside China for a record-breaking stock market listing that regulators halted at the last minute in 2020.
It matters in AI news because its research arm, inclusionAI, releases open models under permissive licences. That is a pattern worth noticing: a lot of the strongest open-weight models now come from large Chinese technology companies rather than from dedicated AI labs, funded by businesses that make their money elsewhere.
