Backflip AI

US startup building AI that converts 3D scans into editable CAD models.

Backflip AI is a startup founded in December 2024, backed by about 30 million dollars, working on one specific problem: turning scanned physical objects back into proper CAD files that engineers can edit. Its co-founder Greg Mark previously built Markforged, a 3D printing company, so the team comes from manufacturing rather than from the AI labs.

The company’s pitch rests on a striking claim, that most factories have digital models for under one percent of their parts. Its second model, released in August 2026, outputs real CAD operations like extrusions and revolutions instead of the triangle meshes earlier AI attempts produced, which is the difference between a file you can modify and one you can only look at. It runs as an add-in for Autodesk Fusion, with four free reconstructions and paid plans from 20 dollars a month.
