Benjamin Mann

A co-founder of Anthropic and one of the authors of the original GPT-3 paper.

Benjamin Mann is one of the seven co-founders of Anthropic. Before that he worked at OpenAI, where he was among the authors of the 2020 GPT-3 paper that first showed how much a language model improves simply by making it much larger. He left with Dario and Daniela Amodei and others in 2021 to start Anthropic, and has worked there on product and on the company’s safety practices.

He appears in news coverage mainly because music publishers named him personally, alongside Dario Amodei, in their August 2026 copyright lawsuit over lyrics used to train Claude. Naming founders as individual defendants is a way of pushing a case beyond the company and towards decisions people made.
