deepfake

A convincing fake image, video or audio clip of a real person or place, made by an AI model.

A deepfake is media that shows something that never happened, produced well enough to pass as a recording. It usually means a face or a voice, a video call from a colleague who was never on the call, or an audio message in a family member’s voice. The same techniques now work on places as well as people, including satellite views.

The practical defence has less to do with spotting the fake and more with changing habits. Verify unexpected requests on a second channel you chose yourself, and treat a voice or a face as a claim rather than as proof.
