DuckLabs

The Amsterdam company behind the DuckDB database, acquired by AWS in August 2026.

DuckLabs is the company founded by Hannes Muehleisen and Mark Raasveldt, who created DuckDB while working at CWI, the Dutch national research institute for mathematics and computer science. It stayed unusually small and unusually independent: just over thirty people after five years, with no outside investors, funded through support and development contracts rather than venture capital.

Amazon agreed to acquire DuckLabs in August 2026. The DuckDB project itself was not part of the deal and remains under the independent DuckDB Foundation with an MIT licence, while the founders continue to lead the technical direction from inside AWS.
