Fairwind Program

Google's gated access scheme that hands its cybersecurity-tuned Gemini models to vetted defenders such as governments, infrastructure operators and software maintainers.

Fairwind launched in September 2026 alongside Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber. The idea is that a model good at finding software vulnerabilities is equally useful to attackers, so rather than releasing it to everyone or nobody, Google requires an application and vets who gets in.

It is part of a wider pattern from 2026: labs shipping a public model with safeguards plus a less restricted sibling behind an approval process. Anthropic does something similar with its Mythos line. The arrangement is sensible and also puts private companies in the position of deciding who counts as a trusted defender.
