Mistral Large 4
Mistral's roughly 1 trillion parameter open-weight model, nicknamed Le Chonk.
Mistral Large 4 is the biggest model from French lab Mistral AI, released with open weights in late October 2026 and nicknamed “Le Chonk”. It has about 1 trillion parameters in total but only wakes around 52 billion at a time, using a mixture of experts design, and it handles text and images.
It is strong at coding for an open model and cheap to use through the API, but it needs serious data centre hardware to run yourself. Some of its benchmark results are self-reported, and models from China and the top closed labs still lead overall.
