Qwant

A French search engine hosted in Europe that does not store search history or profile users for advertising.

Qwant is a search engine built in France on a different bargain from the usual one. It does not store your search history, sell personal data, or target advertising based on what you have been looking at. That means no personalised results, which some people miss and others consider the point.

It matters mostly as a policy story. France’s national assembly and its ministry of the armed forces adopted Qwant back in 2018, and the European Parliament later switched too, treating search less as a free consumer service and more as infrastructure that a government should not outsource entirely to a foreign advertising company. It is part of a wider European push that also covers messaging apps and office software.
