Waymo
Alphabet's self-driving car company, which runs paid robotaxi services in several US cities.
Waymo started life inside Google as its self-driving car project and now sits alongside Google as its own company under Alphabet. It runs robotaxis, meaning cars with no human driver that you hail from an app the same way you would a taxi, in a handful of US cities.
Waymo matters in AI coverage for two reasons. It is the clearest example of a self-driving system that actually carries paying passengers rather than just demoing well, and it has started designing its own chips to bring the cost of each vehicle down.
