Gemini in Your Car Can Now Use Your Gmail, Photos and Calendar, If You Allow It
Google is rolling out Personal Intelligence to Gemini on Android Auto. It is opt-in and uses your own apps to answer questions without extra explaining.
Google is bringing Personal Intelligence to Gemini in Android Auto, the system that mirrors your phone on your car’s screen. According to 9to5Google on October 20, the rollout starts that day. It lets Gemini draw on your Google apps, including Gmail, Calendar, Photos, Maps, Search and YouTube, so you do not have to spell out every detail when you ask for something.
Google’s examples are everyday ones. You can ask about a flight’s gate and delay status in a single request. You can navigate to a doctor’s appointment without knowing the address, because Gemini can find it in your calendar or email. You can find a car wash from a photo you took earlier, or get directions to a coffee shop you mentioned in a previous chat. Gemini can also apply your usual tastes, for instance suggesting indoor restaurants along your route that match what you tend to like.
Availability and privacy details are fairly simple. On Android Auto, the feature arrives automatically if you already turned on Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app on your phone. For Android Automotive, which is the version built into some cars, it is expected “in the coming months,” and personalised answers work only when your phone is connected in the car. It is opt-in, and if you skip it, navigation, music, calls and questions still work, only without the personal touch. The article does not list regions, languages, pricing or how to manage the setting from the car’s screen.
What’s behind it: an assistant is only as helpful as what it knows about you. A chatbot with no context has to ask follow-up questions, which is tolerable at a desk and annoying while driving. By letting Gemini look things up in your own accounts, Google is trading a bit of setup and data access for fewer questions and fewer taps. The same idea already exists on phones; the car is just a place where hands-free convenience matters more.
What this means for you: if you like the idea, check what you have actually allowed in the Gemini app on your phone, since the car feature follows that choice. If it makes you uneasy, simply leave it off and nothing breaks. One sensible habit either way: while driving, use voice for simple requests and leave anything complicated, like reading long emails, for when you have parked.
