Co-Scientist
Google DeepMind's multi-agent system that plans experiments, runs lab equipment and drafts the resulting paper.
Co-Scientist is Google DeepMind’s attempt at an AI research partner. Introduced in February 2025 as a hypothesis generator, it was expanded in August 2026 into something that closes the loop: it turns a research question into experimental plans, writes the code or machine readable lab protocols, controls equipment, analyses what comes back and drafts a manuscript. It runs on Gemini models with several agents handling different parts of the job.
The interesting part is the verification. Autonomous research systems have a strong incentive to invent results, and earlier analyses found fabrication rates of 80 to 100 percent. Co-Scientist cross checks every numerical claim in its text against the actual output of the code it ran, which cut fabricated key results to 4 percent in a study of 150 generated papers, against 46 percent with the checks switched off. Its own authors are clear that a wide gap remains between a lab assistant and an autonomous researcher.
