Digital Markets Act

An EU law that forces the largest tech platforms to open up to competitors.

The Digital Markets Act, usually shortened to DMA, is European legislation aimed at a handful of very large platforms the EU calls gatekeepers, among them Google, Apple, Meta, Amazon and Microsoft. Rather than punishing bad behaviour after the fact, it sets rules in advance: do not favour your own services, let rivals interoperate, let users choose defaults.

For AI it has become surprisingly central. Decisions under the DMA have required Google to open Android to competing AI assistants and to share parts of its search data, which is a faster route to competition than any rival product has managed on its own.
