PyTorch

The most widely used open-source toolkit for building and running AI models.

PyTorch is a free programming toolkit that developers use to build, train and run AI models. Think of it as the workshop most AI engineers share: it supplies the basic building blocks so nobody starts from scratch. Meta created it in 2016 and later handed it to the Linux Foundation, a neutral non-profit.

It matters beyond engineering because PyTorch decides which chips are easy to use. It grew up around Nvidia’s graphics cards, so those are the smoothest option. When Google or Amazon build versions that run on their own chips, they are trying to make switching away from Nvidia easy.
