Yann LeCun
A Turing Award winner and long-standing sceptic of today's language models.
Yann LeCun helped invent the neural network techniques modern AI rests on, work that won him a Turing Award, and spent years as Meta’s chief AI scientist.
His position is contrarian in a useful way: he argues that language models alone will not get us to human-level intelligence, because predicting the next word is not the same as understanding the world. When someone with his record says the current approach has a ceiling, it is worth hearing out.
