Anthropic Finally Settles the Fable 5 Question, and Pro Subscribers Lose Out
After three extensions, Claude Fable 5 is now permanent for Max and Team Premium subscribers, but at half the usual limits. Pro and Team Standard users get a one-time $100 credit and then pay per use.
The long back-and-forth over who gets to use Claude Fable 5 is over, and the answer depends entirely on which plan you pay for. As of July 20, Anthropic includes Fable 5 permanently in its Max and Team Premium plans. Pro and Team Standard subscribers effectively lose it: they receive a one-time $100 usage credit, and once that runs out they pay per use at API rates.
There is a second cut hidden in the same announcement, and it is easy to miss. The bonus usage phase that had been running ended on the same day, which lowers the regular limits for everyone by about a third. Fable 5 is then available at 50 percent of those already reduced limits. So a Max subscriber does keep the model, but with noticeably less room than during the free window. Anthropic acknowledged on its own channels that demand for Fable has been hard to manage and frustrating for users, and said it keeps investing in more capacity.
For context, this is the fourth time the deadline moved. Free access was originally meant to end in June, then was extended repeatedly, most recently to July 19. The original plan was to remove Fable from subscription plans altogether, so the outcome is actually softer than announced, at least for the top tiers.
What is behind it: two kinds of pressure, both about money. Running a frontier model is expensive, and Fable 5 is Anthropic’s most capable and most compute-hungry one, so unlimited access on a flat monthly fee does not add up. At the same time, OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol landed at roughly a third of the cost for broadly comparable performance, and Chinese models keep pushing prices down below the very top tier. Pulling a flagship model from paying subscribers in that climate would have handed rivals an easy argument, so Anthropic split the difference: keep it for the expensive plans, move everyone else to pay-as-you-go. Usage credits, in plain terms, mean you are billed for what you actually consume rather than a flat rate, the way a taxi meter works instead of a monthly travel pass.
What this means for you: if you are on Pro and you had built a habit around Fable 5, expect that $100 credit to disappear faster than it sounds, because heavy tasks like long coding sessions consume credits quickly. Check what you actually need the top model for. For most everyday work, writing, summarising, planning, research, the standard Claude models are more than capable and remain included in your plan. If you genuinely need the strongest model daily, the Max plan is now the only predictable way to get it. And if you are just curious about AI and reading this from the outside: none of this affects the free tier, which is still a perfectly good place to start.
