ChatGPT Ads Hit a Billion Dollar Run Rate in About 200 Days

OpenAI says its advertising business crossed a $1 billion annualized run rate and opened self-serve ad tools to marketers in India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Ads run on the free and Go tiers.

OpenAI said on Monday that its ChatGPT advertising business has crossed a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, roughly 200 days after the pilot started in February. At the same time it opened its self-serve advertising tools to marketers in India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Indian advertisers get access to the ad manager from 4 September with a daily minimum of 725 rupees, about 7.60 dollars.

A run rate is not a year of revenue. It is the current pace multiplied out to twelve months, which flatters fast-growing numbers and is exactly why companies like quoting it. Against OpenAI’s overall business, reported at a run rate north of 40 billion dollars, ads are still a rounding error, and the company is guiding to around 2.5 billion in actual ad revenue this year. Ads have launched in more than 40 countries. They appear for people on the free tier and on the cheaper Go subscription, and OpenAI says they are labelled, kept separate from how ChatGPT composes its answers, and that advertisers cannot see what individual users are discussing. India was the launch market last week, with 50 brands and the agency groups WPP and Omnicom involved.

Why now, and why ads at all. OpenAI is heading towards a public listing, and a company that sells subscriptions and API calls tells one story to investors, while a company that also sells advertising tells a much more familiar one. Advertising is the business model that paid for the consumer internet, and it is the only proven way to make money from hundreds of millions of people who will never pay a monthly fee. That is the honest case for it. The uncomfortable case is equally simple: an advertising business creates a permanent quiet pressure on the product, because the thing you optimise for stops being “answer the question well” and starts being “keep them here.” Search engines lived through this argument twenty years ago. Nobody has yet watched it play out in a system that writes prose instead of listing links.

What this means for you. If you pay for ChatGPT Plus or higher, you are not seeing these ads today. If you use the free tier, you already are or soon will be, and the practical habit is the old one: when an answer recommends a specific product, check whether that recommendation is marked. OpenAI’s stated separation between ads and answers is the load-bearing promise here, and it is worth watching whether it holds as the numbers grow. For anyone running a small business, a self-serve ad manager inside a chat assistant is a genuinely new channel, and early channels are usually cheap. Just remember that nobody yet has reliable data on whether these ads work.
