Expert Intelligence
Google's arrangement for letting people use books and other paid sources inside its AI products, if they own them.
Expert Intelligence is Google’s name for a way of bringing paid, licensed material into its AI tools. It launched in August 2026 with more than 100,000 ebooks from publishers including Penguin Random House, Macmillan and O’Reilly Media, which you can add to a Gemini Notebook and then question directly, with citations pointing back into the book.
The mechanism is an ownership check rather than a licence to train. You must own the title on Google Play Books to use it, and anyone you share a notebook with is prompted to buy their own copy before they can engage with that source. That design is a direct answer to the publishing industry’s complaint about AI training, since the book is supplied per reader per session instead of absorbed into a model. Google says subscriptions, textbooks and research reports will follow, along with support in the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search.
