ChatGPT Finally Has a Real Linux App, and It Brings Codex With It

OpenAI shipped a preview of its desktop app for Linux on August 11, with proper DEB and RPM packages for Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora. Codex, its coding workspace, comes in the same window.

For years, Linux users who wanted ChatGPT had one option: a browser tab. On August 11 that changed. OpenAI released a preview of its desktop app for Linux, packaged properly as DEB and RPM files, and it carries not just the familiar chat interface but ChatGPT Work and Codex too.

The officially supported list is Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44, on both x64 and ARM64 machines. The installer adds an OpenAI package repository to your system, so future updates arrive through apt or dnf like any other software rather than as a manual download. Arch is not officially supported, but community packages already exist in the AUR.

Codex is the part developers will care about. It is OpenAI’s coding workspace, and in the desktop app it gets its own history and window rather than being a mode inside the chat. You point it at a local folder or a Git repository and it can open files, edit them, run tests, review changes and execute commands with your permissions. That last part deserves a pause: a tool that can run commands on your machine is a tool you should introduce to your file system slowly. Linux users could already reach Codex through the command line tool or an editor extension, but the graphical, project shaped workflow was a macOS and Windows privilege until now. OpenAI merged its standalone Codex app into the ChatGPT desktop client on those platforms in July, and the Linux preview follows the same layout.

Why does a desktop app matter when the website works fine? Partly it is small conveniences: a proper window, system integration, no tab that gets lost among forty others. Mostly it is about access. A browser tab can only see what you paste into it. A desktop app can be given a folder, a terminal, a repository. That shift from “a chat you copy things into” to “a program that works on your actual files” is the whole direction of travel in AI tooling this year, and it is also why the permission question keeps coming back. Linux has long been where AI developer tooling was tested last, despite being where a lot of the work happens, so this is a small correction of an odd gap.

What this means for you: if you run Linux and use ChatGPT daily, this is a straightforward upgrade, and the repository setup means you will not be chasing updates. If you are a developer, try Codex on a scratch project first and watch what it does before you hand it a repository that matters. And if you do not use Linux at all, there is still a useful signal here: the assistants are moving off the web page and onto your machine, which makes “what can this thing actually touch” a question worth asking of any AI app you install. Worth remembering that OpenAI calls this a preview, so expect rough edges.
