Anthropic's Numbers Ahead of Its IPO: Revenue Up Twelvefold, Loss of $23 Billion

Reports on Anthropic's updated IPO filing show nearly $17 billion in quarterly revenue, a $23.3 billion net loss and $895 billion in compute commitments.

Anthropic’s financial picture has become public through its IPO paperwork, and several outlets have now reported the numbers. According to Bloomberg, the company took in nearly $17 billion in revenue last quarter, about twelve times the figure from a year earlier. The Information reports that operating costs of $17.5 billion were higher than that revenue, which erased the profit of the previous quarter. The net loss came to $23.3 billion, up from $12.1 billion a year ago.

Two items explain part of the gap. Anthropic reportedly cited about $5 billion for short-term computing capacity and $2 billion for matching employee donations. The bigger story is compute, meaning the data-centre power that runs and trains the models. The New York Times reports dozens of deals with Amazon, Google, SpaceX, chipmakers and former crypto miners, with more than 3.5 gigawatts of power expected this year and a plan to double that next year. The updated prospectus lists $895 billion in compute and data-centre lease commitments. The offering itself could raise around $100 billion, per the NYT, with up to $3.5 billion possibly coming from Japanese investors, according to Nikkei.

What’s behind it: Think of a restaurant that is so busy it keeps renting extra kitchens at short notice. Sales jump, but so do costs, and it signs long leases to feel safer. That is roughly the position of AI labs: demand for their models is growing fast, but serving it needs enormous hardware spending paid in advance. Two cautions apply. “Twelvefold” compares against one quarter a year ago, so part of it is a low starting point. And $895 billion is a multi-year promise, not a cost this year, so it should not be read as a single loss figure. All of the numbers here come from secondary reporting, not from a release by Anthropic itself, and The Decoder did not verify them independently.

What this means for you: As a user, nothing changes today; your plan, prices and tools are the same. The longer-term question is whether any AI company can turn this kind of growth into steady profit, since that shapes future prices and limits. If you build something that depends on one provider, it is sensible to keep your work portable, for example by saving your prompts and files somewhere you control. For everyone else, it is a good moment to remember that big revenue and big losses can sit side by side.
