Astra

OpenAI's next announced model family, built to coordinate several agents on one problem for hours or days.

Astra is the name OpenAI gave its next major model family in August 2026. Where the GPT-5.6 models answer a question in seconds, Astra is designed for work that takes a long time: several agents running in parallel, checking each other, staying on one hard problem for hours or even days. OpenAI introduced it by publishing solutions to ten open mathematics problems.

As of the announcement there was no release date, no price and no decision on whether it ships as GPT-6 or as another GPT-5 variant. It is also expected to be the first model to go through the planned US government pre-release review.
