ForTy
A global forest-type map from Google DeepMind and the World Resources Institute that tells primary forest, regrowth, planted forest and plantations apart.
ForTy, short for Forest Typology, is a free map of the world’s land for the year 2020. Instead of only showing where trees are, it sorts every 10 by 10 metre square into classes like primary forest, naturally regrown forest, planted forest, plantations and tree crops such as oil palm.
It was built with AI on top of satellite data, and it exists partly because EU rules on deforestation-free products need a 2020 starting point. Like any model, it makes mistakes, and its weakest spots are exactly the hard-to-tell-apart classes like plantations and planted forests.
