A Robot Claims to Outrun Usain Bolt. It Has No Hands and No Independent Verification.

Unitree says its Superman humanoid hits 12.66 metres per second and clears a two metre standing jump. The company published no test methodology, calls it a research platform, and unveiled it days before its IPO.

Unitree unveiled a bipedal humanoid called Superman this week and made two eye-catching claims for it: a top speed of 12.66 metres per second, or about 45.6 kilometres per hour, and a two metre standing vertical jump on legs just 0.85 metres long. For scale, Usain Bolt’s peak instantaneous speed during his 2009 world record was measured at around 12.42 metres per second in a published kinematic analysis. So on paper, the robot edges out the fastest human ever timed. Unitree says the machine was built in a little over three months.

Now the parts that did not make the headlines. Unitree published no test methodology and no third-party data, so nobody outside the company can say how the speed was measured, over what distance, or under what conditions. Superman has no hands. The company describes it as an experimental platform for studying highly dynamic movement, states plainly that it is not a commercial product, and says there is significant room for improvement. And the timing is not incidental: the reveal landed days before Unitree began trading in Shanghai, in an IPO that was reportedly more than 8,000 times oversubscribed by retail investors, a record for the STAR Market.

None of this means the claim is false. It means it is unverified, and the difference matters. A useful way to read robotics demos generally: a peak speed on a treadmill or a straight indoor run is a very different achievement from covering ground outdoors, changing direction, recovering from a stumble, or doing any of it while carrying something. Legs are also a special case, because a machine can be built to be extremely light and extremely powerful if it never has to do anything else. Hands, by contrast, are the genuinely hard problem in robotics and have been for forty years, which is exactly why the thing with no hands is the thing that set the record.

There is real engineering here worth respecting. Getting a bipedal machine to run at all without falling over is difficult control work, and doing it in three months says something about how fast the field is iterating. It is just a research result, not a product, and reading it as a product is how people end up disappointed.

What this means for you: nothing practical, and no robot is coming to your street. But this is a good calibration exercise for reading AI and robotics news generally. When a number arrives without a method, treat it as a claim rather than a fact. Ask what the demo deliberately leaves out, ask who benefits from the timing, and check whether the thing being shown is a product or an experiment. Those three questions will serve you well for most of what crosses your feed this year.
